Rules

  1. Students should bring their instrument and their music every day.

Sometimes students will rely on their stand partner to have their music, so they won’t have their own.  This becomes a problem when the stand partner assumes that they other student will have their music, and neither has theirs.  Also, music gets marked in rehearsal every day, and if a student doesn’t have their music with them, important corrections in the music can be missed.

  1. Students should have a sharp pencil, with an eraser, on their stands at all times.

A pencil is defined as a sharpened graphite writing surface (#2 density) with an adequate eraser on the same unit.  Anything else is a stick.

  1. Be prepared for rehearsal by practicing and music assigned.

When you are given a specific practice requirement. Please be prepared to play the exercise. You will be tested if given a practice expectation.

  1. Instrument cases should be clearly marked with first and last name.

Instrument cases look alike, and are easily mistaken for one another.  Placing a sticker or other mark is not sufficient, because it doesn’t identify the instrument’s owner.

  1. Music should be marked with first and last name.

Music properly marked is returned when found with no penalty.  Unmarked music is returned, but the student will serve after-school detention if this is a repeated problem.

  1. Mark music only in pencil.  Note:  There is no such thing as erasable pen.

Marks made is music are often erased.  Erasable pen is only erasable for a short time, so it is not a substitute for a pencil.

  1. Throw trash in the trashcan, not on the floor.

Even though there are only three classes in the band room, they are comprised of nearly 200 students, so reed cases, slips of paper, etc.  can make a huge mess.  Also, the band room is difficult to clean due to it’s setup.

  1. All percussion equipment is put away after each class.

Don’t leave equipment out because “the other class might use it.”  Put everything away.

  1. Instruments go home every day unless special arrangements have been made in advance.

You cannot practice an instrument that is not at home.  Instruments left at school usually comprise the playing test list for the following day.
